What Do We Owe Each Other
TM Scanlon proposed that what is owed between any two people is what we can do that would not be reasonably rejected by others. But this is necessitated on the assumption of equality, which has never existed.
So what do we owe each other?
Is anyone’s life worth as much as yours? How about their death? Should I smile less so everyone can smile more? Should I kill myself so my ex gf has something good happen to her for once? Or is that unreasonable? Where would you draw the line on your own life?
I wake up most mornings with a very sharp inhale and I feel it on the side of my ribs. I’ve asked a doctor if I should be concerned about this but she said no. Chick doctor so who knows. Every morning begins with me feeling like I’m getting poked with a stick. It’s a beautiful reminder that we’re all getting poked with sticks. Gotta get out of bed anyway.
I’ve always hated the smell of morning air. When I was in college we’d use to wake up early and do some calisthenics as the dew settled on the grass. I’d throw up most mornings from the smell of fresh dew. Still makes me nauseous. Even still I woke up at 4am every morning for 6 years so I could make a couple dollars and build my life.
What am I owed from anyone for this? For waking up? Nothing in my eyes. The world will give you what you take from it and no one else will give you anything.
People change like the seasons, but people never change. The most important thing you can do in the world is learn to love yourself, and the second is learn to love those that hate you.
